Breitling Expands Its Avenger Collection With Five Black Ceramic Night Mission Watches
Breitling just unveiled a bunch of new Avenger models. With a handful of new black ceramic Night Mission editions alongside new 46mm titanium and 42mm stainless steel Avenger chronographs, there is plenty to talk about. The Night Mission versions that stand out immediately are the 42mm chronographs with Sand and Turquoise colorways. And what do we think of a 46mm titanium Avenger Chronograph? With this expansion of the Avenger collection, we have a lot of ground to cover, so let’s go over the new watches individually.
If you are familiar with Breitling’s catalog, you know that the Avenger is the brand’s line of modern aviation watches. Specifically, they are made for fighter pilots, so the watches were created to withstand extreme conditions. The Avenger has been part of the collection for 20 years and was completely revamped last year, as Lex explained. With the latest introductions, a plethora of new Avenger references joins the lineup. The Night Mission models with black ceramic cases look super cool, so let’s start with those.
Breitling Avenger B01 Chronograph 42 Night Mission in Sand and Turquoise
When Breitling unveiled the revamped Avenger collection last year, two Night Mission models were in the lineup. These stealthy Avengers each featured a 44mm black ceramic case. Now the brand has added two more with 42mm cases, and they look impressively cool. These two watches measure 15.15mm thick and 51.21mm from lug to lug. The unidirectional black ceramic bezel features a 60-minute scale and the famous rider tabs that give the watch that unmistakable Breitling character.
Inside the 300m-water-resistant cases, Breitling equips the watches with its in-house B01 caliber. This COSC-certified chronograph movement operates at 28,800vph, has 45 jewels, and offers 70 hours of power reserve. The beautiful movement is visible through the titanium and sapphire case back, which reveals a branded open-worked rotor and neat finishing. The chronograph features a column wheel and vertical clutch, which are operated by the large titanium pushers on the right side of the case. I love that Breitling executed the screw-down crown and pushers in satin-finished titanium rather than making them black. This gives them a nice contrast with the case.
The Sand version is a great addition to the lineup
The first of these two Avenger Night Mission models is the impressive Sand version (ref. SB0146101B1X1). It features a black carbon dial with black chronograph counters and applied Arabic numerals filled with sand-colored lume. The 30-minute counter also features sand-colored accents, and the sub-dial at 6 o’clock contains the date window. The watch comes on a 22mm matching military leather strap with a titanium folding clasp. The smaller size and awesome looks will surely make this a crowd favorite. This watch is undoubtedly my favorite model within the Avenger lineup, and you can own it for €9,400.
The second version (ref. SB0146101L1X1) combines the black ceramic case with a bright turquoise dial with black sub-dials. The 30-minute counter features red details, which match the red tip of the central chronograph hand and inject the watch with a nice extra pop of color.
The hands and numerals are filled with white Super-LumiNova for a colorful and crisp aesthetic. Finally, the watch comes with a turquoise military leather strap and a titanium folding clasp. Priced at €9,200, the Turquoise version is slightly cheaper than the Sand model.
Breitling Super Avenger B01 Chronograph 46 Night Mission
If a 42mm or 44mm is too small for you, do not worry — Breitling has you covered. The third new Night Mission model is the Super Avenger B01 Chronograph (ref. SB0148101B1X1). This watch has a 46mm black ceramic case with a 15.32mm thickness, a 54.75mm lug-to-lug, and a 300m depth rating. It features the same carbon dial material and layout as the 42mm Sand version. However, the main difference is that the applied numerals feature a filling of light green lume.
Completing the look is a 24mm green military leather strap that tapers nicely to 20mm at the titanium folding clasp. In this case, Breitling uses the same B01 chronograph movement as in the 42mm and 44mm models. While a 46mm watch seems daunting, from my experience, Breitling knows how to make a big watch that wears well.
What certainly helps is that the black ceramic case is fairly light. This model weighs 120.57 grams versus 109.58 grams for the 42mm versions. All in all, this is still a big watch, but the stealthy execution and subdued military green do not make it seem overwhelmingly large. Lastly, the price for this 46mm Super Avenger is €9,600, which is only slightly more expensive than its smaller counterparts.
Breitling Avenger Automatic 42 Night Mission
Next up is the 42mm Avenger Automatic (ref. S17328101B1X1). It also features a 300m-water-resistant black ceramic case, this time with a 12.25mm thickness and a 51.21mm lug-to-lug. For this new version, Breitling decided to go full stealth mode with a black carbon dial and an anthracite military leather strap with a titanium folding clasp.
The white lume and the little hints of red on the dial and tip of the seconds hand provide just a hint of contrasting colors. Inside the case, we find the Breitling caliber 17, which is essentially a COSC-certified version of the Sellita SW200-1. This automatic caliber operates at 28,800vph and offers 38 hours of power reserve. The watch is available for €6,100.
Breitling Avenger Automatic GMT 44 Night Mission
The last of the new Night Mission models is a GMT version (ref. S32320101B1X1) featuring a 44mm black ceramic case with a 12.35mm thickness, a 53mm lug-to-lug, and a 300m depth rating. Fittingly, the bidirectional black ceramic bezel has a 24-hour scale, and so does the dial’s rehaut. Therefore, the wearer can track three time zones at once. Under the sapphire crystal, we find a black carbon dial with Arabic numerals filled with light green lume and a date window at 3 o’clock. The gray hands that display the local time feature white lume, while the 24-hour GMT hand is completely white. Little red and white triangles mark the cardinal points for a little contrast. Breitling powers this watch with its caliber 32, a COSC-certified version of the Sellita SW330-2. This caller-GMT-style movement operates at 28,800vph and has 42 hours of power reserve. Finally, this model is available for €6,800.
Breitling Super Avenger B01 Chronograph 46
Next to the Night Mission models, Breitling also released several models in titanium and steel. The first is the full-titanium Super Avenger B01 Chronograph 46, which comes with a 46mm titanium case with a 15.2mm thickness and a 54.7mm lug-to-lug. The 300m-water-resistant case is combined with a blue dial with black registers and a black rehaut (ref. EB0148101C1E1). Red details and gray indexes with white lume contrast the two colors.
As you can see, the date window is integrated at 6 o’clock, and the watch comes on a full titanium bracelet. A second version (ref. EB0148101B1E1) has a black dial and registers with red details. Inside the case, you will find the same B01 movement that powers the other chronographs in the series. On the titanium bracelet, the watches cost €9,750, but if you opt for an anthracite or blue military leather strap with a folding clasp, you will pay €8,750.
Breitling Avenger B01 Chronograph 42
The last three releases are variations of the Breitling Avenger B01 Chronograph 42. These watches have a 42mm stainless steel case with a 15.05mm thickness, a 51.21mm lug-to-lug, and a 300m water resistance rating. The first two versions feature a blue dial (ref. AB0146101C1A1) or green dial (ref.AB0146101L1A1) with contrasting black sub-dials. There is also a version with a black dial and matching sub-dials (ref. AB0146101B1A1). All three models feature red details to contrast the dial colors. Inside the case, we once again find the B01 chronograph movement.
The three different versions are available on a stainless steel bracelet or dial-matching military leather straps with a folding clasp. The watches cost €8,100 on the stainless steel bracelet and €7,800 on the straps. In return, you get a super capable modern chronograph with that distinct Breitling Avenger feel.
Final thoughts on the new Breitling introductions
Overall, I love seeing these new Avengers, although almost too many came out at once. The Night Mission models are right up my alley in terms of looks. In particular, the 42mm sand-colored Night Mission version is an absolute stunner of a watch. If you are looking for a great military/desert-style chronograph, this is a great option.
