Fratello Talks: How Much Should You Spend On Your First Watch?
Welcome to this week’s episode of Fratello Talks. How much should you spend on your first watch? It’s a valid question we’ve all faced at some point. However, there are plenty of different ways to answer it. Today, Nacho, RJ, and Daan delve into the topic and discuss their approaches to budgeting for a first watch. It’s worth mentioning that we aren’t talking about a “first-ever” watch but, rather, a first “nicer” watch. Whether you ultimately decide to go all out or cleverly invest a smaller amount to test the waters, we hope today’s discussion will help you navigate the subject. Now, before we get into it, let’s see what’s on the wrist.
Wrist check
Today, RJ’s wrist is sporting what was formerly the latest addition to the Speedmaster family (until this week’s new Speedy Moonphase took its spot), the Omega Speedmaster Pilot Flight Qualified. This two-register Speedmaster is the civilian version of Omega’s USAF-exclusive chronograph. The two major differences are present on either side of the watch. The first is the light blue (rather than gray) upper half of the artificial-horizon-inspired sub-dial at 9 o’clock. On the flip side, it’s the case back, which has the hippocampus medallion instead of the emblem of the individual pilot’s USAF squadron. Still, despite those subtle differences, it’s a brilliant addition to the Speedmaster catalog.
It should come as no surprise to see the Cartier Santos Galbée XL on Daan’s wrist. He has recently not been able to get enough of it. It seems that his love for it has been rekindled in a major way. We certainly can’t hold it against him. It truly is a great watch that is versatile enough to wear every single day. And Daan is rightfully taking advantage of that.
Wrapping up the wrist check, Nacho is wearing his trusty Citizen Promaster NY0040. This dive watch was introduced in 1996 and has continued to offer a perfect balance of value and specs to this very day. It was his first mechanical dive watch and the first that he took scuba diving. Therefore, it holds many great memories and a special place in his collection. Fratello Talks: How Much Should You Spend On Your First Watch?
This is a valid question that most people just starting their watch-collecting journey will face. It can be a kind of dilemma, and the solution doesn’t always lie at the end of a perfectly straight path. There are certainly many ways to end up where you ideally want to be: that is, happily enjoying a great watch. We don’t all have the same spending power, but that shouldn’t be an obstacle between you and the right timepiece to get you started. Today, we discuss our different views and approaches when it comes to doing so. And as you’ll quickly see, there’s no one right answer. That said, we’d love to hear your thoughts on the matter.
