Fratello Talks: Picking A New Watch For The Next James Bond
Welcome to the latest episode of Fratello Talks. While the rest of the world ponders who the next actor will be to don the tux and become the newest double-O seven, today, we ask ourselves what the man behind the gun will wear on his wrist. You join Nacho, RJ, and Lex to discuss James Bond’s watches, past and present, and some thoughts on what we’d like to see in the future. When picking a new watch for the next James Bond, there are many options to consider. However, as we know, it will likely be an Omega timepiece. The choice within the brand’s catalog is extensive, and many options could suit the gun-toting spy well. That said, we still discuss some watches from other brands that could also be a solid pick.
Before we ski-BASE jump into it, let’s see what the guys have on their wrists.
Wrist check
Once again, it’s an Omega full house. Speaking of Bond watches, RJ is wearing one of the Omega Seamasters that started it all for 007, the SMP 300M 2531.80.00. This was Pierce Brosnan’s Bond’s choice for three back-to-back movies — Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), The World Is Not Enough (1999), and Die Another Day (2002). If you want to know more about this particular watch, you can find a piece RJ wrote a couple of years ago here.
Lex has opted for a watch that Bond has never worn, the Omega Speedmaster Broad Arrow ref. 3594.50.00. With its distinctive steel bezel and bold Broad Arrow hands, this is not your everyday Speedy. And though the secret agent has never donned Omega’s most iconic chronograph, we wonder: would this look so out of place on James Bond’s wrist? Honestly, we don’t think so. Even if it took a space-faring remake of 1979’s Moonraker, we’d love to see the MI6 agent put a Speedmaster (any Speedmaster) to good use on the silver screen.
And last but certainly not least, Nacho is wearing his Omega Seamaster Professional 300M ref. 2254.50.00. This is yet another watch that was never on Bond’s wrist, even though an old Omega ad touts it as “Pierce Brosnan’s choice.” However, we can’t help but think that this would have been a perfect pick for Bond. It’s slightly more severe than the 2531.80 and even features the sword hands typical of British mil-spec watches. Talk about a missed opportunity! Not all hope is lost, though; wouldn’t it be great to see Omega reissue the 2254 with a modern twist and make it the watch of choice for the next James Bond? It’s a long shot, but here’s hoping!
Fratello Talks: Picking A New Watch For The Next James Bond
In today’s episode of Fratello Talks, the guys discuss potential new Bond watches and (briefly) some of the actors they’d like to see playing the role. They delve into many hypothetical scenarios in which Bond could be equipped with a handful of different watches, from a Moonraker remake with the spy deploying a Speedmaster for the first time to an underwater mission on which charges are detonated by the Ploprof’s signature bezel-lock button. Another possibility would be for the double-O agent to be featured in a period piece, with vintage watches to match. Perhaps we could even see Bond in his early days of training with a CWC watch on his wrist. Finally, they discuss some other watches that they could also see making an appearance, including the Rolex that James Bond wears in the books.
Be sure to tune in and listen to the episode, and, of course, let us know the watch you’d love to see on the wrist of the new James Bond in the comments section below. Finally, as always, tune in next week for another episode of Fratello Talks!
