Welcome back to Fratello Talks. Should you wear your watch while playing sports or exercising? It’s a question we often hear. What could the possible risks be for your beloved mechanical timepiece? Or is there no real reason to be worried at all? In today’s episode, Nacho, RJ, and Lex explore these questions and speak from personal experience. They also look to some sports professionals to see what their approaches are and whether they should serve as an example in the first place. So, whether you’re living life on the edge, wearing your mechanical watch no matter what you’re up to, or playing it safe and breaking out the G-Shock when the going gets tough, tune in to hear the guys’ take on the matter. But before teeing off, let’s check out what’s on their wrists today.

We start with RJ, who is not exactly wearing the sportiest watch in his collection. That’s not to say he’s afraid to wear a watch while playing golf or working out at the gym. His go-to? You may not be surprised that it’s his trusty Speedmaster. If it’s good enough for NASA astronauts, it should withstand a decent drive.

Lex is holding a track stand while waiting for the light to turn green, just like the dial of his freshly serviced Oris × Momotaro Divers Sixty-Five. This is not his go-to watch for cycling — far from it. His usual go-to for cycling is his Omega × Swatch MoonSwatch Mission on Earth on a rubber strap. However, he also recently went on quite a ride with a Tudor FXD, which you can read about here.

Today, Nacho is wearing his new (to him) Scurfa Diver One. Founded by British commercial diver Paul Scurfield, the brand has focused on offering affordable yet qualitative tool watches for just over 10 years now. The Diver One is the brand’s flagship product. It features a 500m-water-resistant 40mm titanium case with a helium escape valve and a unidirectional 120-click bezel. It’s also powered by a reliable Swiss quartz movement. For more info, check out the Scurfa website.

Fratello Talks: Should You Wear Your Watch While Playing Sports Or Exercising?

It’s a valid question. Many watch owners would love to wear their watches 24/7 but may be apprehensive about whether they should, especially those who partake in sports and activities that may put a watch and its internal mechanical components at risk. Unlike brand ambassadors, who are often loaned or given their watches to wear, we trade our hard-earned money for these timekeeping tools. It only makes sense, then, that you don’t want to put them at risk. However, they’re often more resilient than you might think. Ultimately, it comes down to a subjective approach to the risk-taking scenario. If it matters to you to keep your watch pristine, then you’ll be more averse to risk. But if you’re one to wear your watch without worry and don’t mind dings, dents, and scuffs, you won’t think twice about it.

As with any subjective topic, there is a lot of conflicting information and nuance out there, but today, we try to cut through the fog and offer some concrete advice.
