Glashütte Original PanoMaticLunar In Forest Green
The Glashütte Original Pano collection is one of the simplest yet classiest lines from the brand. Out of all of the models in the family, the PanoMaticLunar is probably the one that packs the most punches in terms of elegance thanks to the somewhat anachronistic complication, the moon-phase. For the first time, Glashütte releases the PanoMaticLunar in a beautiful deep green dial that took inspiration from the depth of the forest on the Ore Mountains bordering Saxony and Bohemia.
The concept of the Glashütte Original Pano collection is simple. The watch has a time-only off-center dial with a sub-dial for seconds, which gives the designers enough real-estate on the watch face for complications. The big date is always present, often matched with other features such as power reserve, an intricate chronograph display, or a moon-phase indicator. The Glashütte PanoMaticLunar, as its name suggest, has the latter.
Forest Green Dial
German watchmaking is just as significant as Swiss, at least within the industry. While the country has manufactures all over, the two most prominent areas are Glashütte in the East and the Black Forest in the South West of Germany.

Whereas Glashütte Original is traditionally from the small watchmaking city of Glashütte, the brand’s in-house dial manufacturer is in Pforzheim, on the rim on the Black Forest. The craftsmen in Pforzheim were responsible for developing this new forest green gradient dial for the PanoMaticLunar. As far as the process goes, the steps sound simple, but they take a lot of practice to reach this level of quality.
Firstly, the brass dial plate receives galvanic nickel treatment. Afterward, the dial experts spray the outer edge with black lacquer to create the dégradé effect. Lastly, comes the transparent green lacquer, which is the finishing touch on this handcrafted, highly detailed work.
Silver Moon
The dial is ready, but the work is not done. A small but prominent detail of the PanoMaticLunar is the moon-phase disc. The aperture at the 2 o’clock is reminiscent of a lake surrounded by this vast green wooded land. A silver-colored moon with a star-studded night sky covers the disc’s surface. The moon plate is also the fruit of the Pforzheim dial manufacture’s labor.
The result is an exceptional brilliance.
Using a milling tool, they cut out the two moons. This gives a fantastic convex shape to the celestial body. Then, with the help of a diamond milling tool, both moons receive a surface polish. The result is an exceptional brilliance. Finally, the stars of the night sky appear in the moon-phase disc as a result of galvanic treatment. Nowadays, a moon-phase indication is rarely used, if at all. Yet, due to the amount of craftsmanship that goes into creating this small complication, you cannot help but admire it.
PanoMaticLunar
We looked at the details that make up the dial of the PanoMaticLunar, but let’s take a look at the timepiece as a whole. The most prominent feature is clearly the off-center dial. Although it looks easy to create there is science behind that. The name of the term being, Golden Ratio. I will not get into the details (here’s an explanation of it).
Still, it shows the effort that the designers and engineers at Glashütte Original spent on designing the Pano collection. The auxiliary dials for the time and the seconds are on the left half of the dial. The aesthetics are pleasing and modest. The stainless steel case with polished and brushed surfaces visually matches the white gold hands filled with Super-LumiNova inlays.
Caliber 90-02
The sapphire crystal case back offers us a magnificent view of the PanoMaticLunar’s beating heart. Glashütte’s manufacture caliber 90-02 is an exquisitely finished automatic movement. Easily recognizable by its signature double swank-neck fine adjustment and other traditional Glashütte elements. The three-quarter plate being one, or the Glashütte decorative finishes, just to name a pair. The 90-02 has blued screws, screw-mounted gold chatons, and a frequency of 4Hz. A 42-hour power reserve and a 50m water resistance make this watch suitable for daily wear.
