Get ready, Indiana Jones fans! Your favorite hero archaeologist is making a grand return to the silver screen on June 30th after a 15-year absence. This fifth installment of Lucasfilm’s Indiana Jones franchise is billed to be the last hurrah of the saga. And with a title like Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, it’s hardly surprising that there would be an affiliation to a watch.

On his adventures this time, Harrison Ford’s character Indy is sporting the Hamilton Boulton watch alongside his signature whip and fedora. At 80 years young, the actor has a fitting choice of the Boulton as a trusty companion in the film. Indeed, both Ford and the Hamilton watch hail from the early 1940s. Without dropping a spoiler, some of the scenes are also set in that period.

A watch from the ’40s

The Boulton, originally launched in 1941, was one of Hamilton’s most sought-after watches from that world-changing decade. Given a fresh lease on life in the 1980s and reintroduced several times thereafter, the Boulton continues to meet modern needs while maintaining its vintage charm. The latest version of the Boulton calls to mind old-school elegance while restyled for an everlasting classic.

The distinctive case has a tonneau shape with an Art Deco vibe and features stainless steel construction with yellow gold PVD coating. It is a tad larger than its original counterpart, measuring 31.6mm long and 27mm wide with a thickness of 7.8mm. The lug spacing stands at 18mm, and it measures 41.5mm from lug tip to lug tip. Under the mineral glass, the silvery-white dial features a small seconds register at 6 o’clock. The three brass hands as well as the raised hour numerals are all finished in a gold tone that matches the case.

A stylistic refresh

In my mind, the standout feature here is the choice of typeface for the Arabic numerals — a rare, old-fashioned serif style. It’s practically a facelift from the previous and other Boulton versions with Roman numerals. And let’s not forget about those subtle touches that dial up the charm factor. There’s the crisp Hamilton wordmark sitting pretty at 12 o’clock, now alone without the H logo, leaving the dial clean and classy. There’s also the railroad minutes track tracing its way around the edge of the dial, reminding us of Hamilton’s origin in serving the American railroad market. It’s all in the details, folks.

A trusted timekeeper

As for the innards, this Hamilton Boulton is a quartz model with the ETA caliber 980.163 inside. While there is nothing to write home about in micro-mechanical terms, this 15-jewel movement certainly offers reliability and ease of use. The rustic all-American look of the watch is complete with a brown leather strap in an alligator finish. You can almost picture this exact kind of watch on a scholarly gent from the nostalgic era, especially one who likes to trot the globe on wild adventures.

Hamilton has also revealed that the Boulton won’t be the only timepiece making an appearance in the film. Indy’s ally Renaldo, portrayed by Antonio Banderas, will be flaunting a Khaki Navy Scuba on screen. The Swiss watch brand, steeped in American tradition, collaborated with Ben Wilkinson from the film’s props team to ensure that the timepieces matched perfectly with the era-specific costume designed by Joanna Johnston. It seems like we’re in for a treat, with quite a bit of watch-spotting action coming up later this month.

So get set to witness the performance of the Hamilton Boulton (and its legendary wearer) in the final chapter of Indiana Jones’ thrilling journey.
