We have all heard the phrase “time is money,” but what if you could make it come to life visually? Leave it to the team at IFL Watches to put a fun spin on that. For its newest release, the Stockholm-based brand whimsically embodied the concept using the dial of a Citizen Tsuyosa Automatic. It’s another limited-edition IFLW take on this watch that once again shows how its classic style combines nicely with a playful dial. Let’s take a closer look!

If you didn’t know by now, we love the special dials the IFL Watches team manages to create. This resulted in the special collaborative IFL Watches × Fratello CasiOak “Moonlander” unveiled two weeks ago. The watch shows perfectly how much detail and care the team’s artists put into creating the dials. For the brand’s latest release, IFLW’s artists wanted to visualize what “time is money” looks like. But as you would have guessed, it’s done with a smile. The statement piece reminds you to use your time wisely because you can never reclaim it.

This active reminder to seize the day started life as a Citizen NJ0150-56L. This blue-dial version of the brand’s popular Tsuyosa Automatic is a stylish timepiece that offers incredible value for money. I had a chance to review it along with the black-dial version a little over two years ago and was impressed by both.

But we know that the artists at IFL Watches use standard dials as the canvas for their art. As a result, you get a completely different watch.

As I explained in previous articles about IFL’s dials, the point is not just to create a nice picture. First off, from a distance, there should also be a clear contrast between colors. In this instance, we see a contrast between the blue of the base dial and the mainly gold and brown tones of the money and the hourglass. Once you zoom in, the details of the painting should tell the story.

As you can see, the translation of the “time is money” concept was painted very literally. At the base of the dial, you will find coins and gemstones. Placed on top of the mountain of coins on the left side is an hourglass representing the passing of time. On the right side, you see a stack of bills and coins flying away as time passes.

The details of the Tsuyosa NJ0150

If you zoom in further, you will see the great detail that went into creating this dial. And as with all limited-edition dials, each one is painted completely by hand and, therefore, unique. In this case, every dial will surely have people looking at your watch and asking you about what it represents. And by that, I do not just mean what the dial represents but also what “time is money” means to you.

As a reminder, the Citizen Tsuyosa Automatic has a 40mm stainless steel case that is 11.7mm thick and 49mm from lug to lug. This case has a predominantly brushed finish, but the polished bezel provides a nice visual contrast. The crown is positioned at 4 o’clock and integrated into the case nicely. On the dial, we find large hour markers with white lume and a date window at 3 o’clock. Citizen has also made reading the date easier thanks to a magnifier on the crystal.

The Tsuyosa gives off proper luxury vibes

The watch comes on an integrated President-style stainless steel bracelet that is super flexible and comfortable on the wrist. This bracelet’s mix of brushed and polished links adds a visual sparkle that gives off luxury vibes. The bracelet features a folding clasp with a push-button release and a few pin holes for micro-adjustment.

If you turn the watch around, you will get a glimpse of the in-house-produced Citizen caliber 8210. This automatic movement operates at 21,600vph and delivers a 40-hour power reserve. According to Citizen, the average accuracy is approximately ±20 seconds per day. I could have done without the display case back because the brass movement has a very basic look and finish. It takes away from the luxury feel that the rest of the watch has. Then again, the real fun is on the dial side of the watch.

Final thoughts on the IFLW Citizen Tsuyosa Time Is Money Concept

Overall, this is another fun addition to IFL’s quickly growing portfolio of limited editions. As the brand explains, it reminds us to keep chasing our dreams because there is only a limited amount of time to make them come true. Those are great words to live by, and it’s up to you how you make your dreams happen. Whether it is going to be Gordon Gekko style, in which the dream is money, or a more relaxed approach, in which money makes dreams possible, the theme fits well.
