IFL Watches Releases The Oris Aquis Atlantis — Exploring The Great Depths Of The Sea
IFL Watches keeps knocking out one fun release after another. Among the brand’s projects, we have seen some amazing dial art that varies greatly in style but is always interesting. As I said in previous articles, my favorites are the Midnight Sky and Galaxy dials used for different models. The technique of pointillism adds great depth and fun to the watches. Next, the artists at IFLW have also created some great storytelling dials. The latest in the series is the Oris Aquis Atlantis. The dial of the brand’s popular dive watch tells the intriguing story of the lost empire of Atlantis. Let’s find out more!
IFL Watches has focused on telling fun and intriguing stories on the dials of different Oris models. The previous Oris watches with customized dials I wrote about were the Divers 65 Aeroman and Boogeyman. They featured the Oris bear on the dials in two different adventures. As follow-ups to the Divers 65 Candyman, the two watches completed a trilogy of dials featuring the Oris Bear and sold out quickly. Now IFLW is introducing the new Oris Aquis Atlantis. It’s the first Aquis with a special storytelling dial, taking us to the great depths of the sea.
IFL Watches and Oris
But this is not the first time IFLW has modified an Oris Aquis. In March 2023, the company gave this professional dive watch the Midnight Sky treatment by adding colorful dots to the dial.
This pointillism technique has become a signature style of IFL Watches that many fans love. I am one of them, and I even considered buying the Divers 65 Tiffany Sky. However, as I know from experience, even slight hesitation will leave you empty-handed as IFLW’s projects sell out in no time.
For the new Aquis Atlantis, the company takes a different approach. The artists at IFLW customized the Aquis dial to tell the tale of Atlantis. The story of the fictional city, as told in Plato’s works Timaeus and Critias, has been a great inspiration for many art creations. As it turns out, it also works on the dial of a watch. The dial takes us to the ocean’s depths to unveil Atlantis’s mysteries.
The story of the Oris Aquis Atlantis
The spirit of the great deep-sea explorers inspired the hand-painted dials of the Aquis Atlantis. IFLW will produce 50 of these dials that tell the story of exploring the ocean’s vast and unseen landscapes. The dial shows a deep-sea diver exploring the ocean and discovering the remains of Atlantis’s naval empire. With shimmering light coming into the picture from the 11 o’clock marker, the ruins of the city of Atlantis unveil themselves to the diver and the wearers of the watch.
Not only does it add detail, but it also creates a nice bit of contrast with the predominantly blue backdrop. The lower part of the dial shows the bottom of the ocean with an abundance of seaweed that the diver has to wade through. As with all IFLW limited editions, each watch’s unique edition number is part of the artwork. In this case, it is placed on a rock on the ocean floor and located between 4 and 5 o’clock. Overall, the image is cleverly executed and draws you into the story of Atlantis.
The canvas for the hand-painted dial of the Aquis Atlantis
For this special Atlantis edition, IFLW has chosen the 41.5mm Oris Aquis as the canvas. The case measures 12.7mm thick and 48mm from lug to lug, and, like most Aquis models, it offers a 300m water resistance rating.
The watch has a domed sapphire crystal with an antireflective coating, so the hand-painted dial is always nicely visible. Inside the case, you will find the Sellita SW200-1-based Oris caliber 733. This automatic movement operates at 28,800vph and has 38 hours of power reserve.
The watch comes fitted with the familiar stainless steel bracelet that Oris uses for the Aquis line. Its three-row design combines brushed center links and polished outer links, giving the Aquis visual pizzazz. Back on the dial, IFLW did very well to leave the white Super-LumiNova on the hour markers as it was. It contrasts nicely with the image of Atlantis and ensures that the watch retains all of its functionality during the day and at night.
Final thoughts on the IFLW Oris Aquis Atlantis
Each of the 50 pieces in this series features a unique, numbered dial. On top of that, each watch will come with a specially designed single-watch roll, a watchmaking loupe, and a Robotoy watch stand. Combining the customized watch and accessories makes for a neat set that tells a wonderful and fun story. The price for the full set will be €3,490, and they will go on sale later today at 16:00 CET. With only 50 sets available, I have no doubts that they will go fast.
It’s always intriguing and fun to see what the team at IFL Watches comes up with. With this special Oris Aquis Atlantis, the brand has created another great storyteller that celebrates the spirit of exploration and discovery. With every new release, IFLW shows that the creativity to constantly develop new stories and hand-painted dials is endless. As a result, I am always curious to see what is next for the brand. For now, I will dive into the story of Atlantis a bit more to learn more about the details of this unique dial.
