Introducing: The Gerald Charles Maestro 9.0 Roman Tourbillon White Gold
Gerald Charles continues to release new watches with artfully crafted surfaces. Today, the Maestro 9.0 Roman Tourbillon White Gold is the focus. It features a handmade dial and exotic movement. As a limited edition, it joins a previous release with a rose gold dial.
Earlier this week, we detailed the Maestro 2.0 Ultra-Thin Lapis Lazuli, a watch made to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Gerald Charles brand. Now, we’re taking a closer look at the new Maestro 9.0 Roman Tourbillon White Gold. The dial is a tour de force, but the timepiece is equipped with a highly finished tourbillon from Vaucher Manufacture Fleurier.
The Gerald Charles Maestro 9.0 Roman Tourbillon White Gold
The Maestro 9.0 Roman Tourbillon White Gold has a 316L stainless steel case that measures 39mm wide by 41mm long. Its Grade 5 titanium bezel has a coating of blue Colormix, a chemical and physical surface treatment. It’s the same process found on the recently reviewed Ultra-Thin. Flat sapphire crystals on both sides of the watch yield a total thickness of just 9.3mm. Still, the watch has a 100m water resistance rating. Unlike most other Maestro pieces equipped with a rubber strap, this 9.0 Tourbillon is paired with a matte blue alligator strap and folding clasp.
The hand-hammered white gold dial
Gerald Charles shares that the dial is 18K white gold alloyed with palladium. To achieve its texture, a highly skilled artisan hammers the dial using a tool. The process takes approximately 23 hours with a production rate of two watches per month. This métier d’art creates a unique surface for each watch that radiates from the center.
Photos show additional details, including the inscribed channels for the hour markers, the oculus for the rotating tourbillon, and the flat area for the logo. Also, the Roman numerals have Colormix borders. Super-LumiNova comprises the white material inside each index. To stay on the blue theme, these emit a light blue hue in darkness.
The GCA 3024/12 automatic tourbillon
The Maestro 9.0 Roman Tourbillon uses the Vaucher Manufacture Fleurier GCA 3024/12 caliber. Several finishing techniques are on display, including snailing, perlage, and Côtes de Genève. Additionally, many components feature diamond-polished anglage.
Expect 50 hours of power reserve and a frequency of 28,800vph. Furthermore, the tourbillon cage uses Grade 5 titanium, and the tourbillon bridges are 18K yellow gold. A 22K rose gold 4N rotor brings another visible hue via the sapphire display back.
The Roman Tourbillon is an exclusive watch
Gerald Charles is producing just 50 of the Roman Tourbillon White Gold. After pre-ordering, delivery takes approximately two months. The price is €122,000, making this an exclusive and expensive option. Still, the dial is fabulous, and a tourbillon is interesting for many well-heeled buyers. For my money, though, I’d see increased value with a full white gold case. I think it’s a fair request at this price level. Otherwise, I like the color combination, the dial texture, and the overall design.
