Introducing: The Hamilton Boulton Death Stranding 2 Limited Edition
Hamilton is no stranger to working with creative teams behind movies to produce imaginative watches. Now, with the introduction of the Boulton Death Stranding 2 Limited Edition, the brand has a watch appearing in an upcoming video game. It’s a fusion between a traditional tank and a futuristic techno-apocalyptic creation. This watch is most definitely worth a closer look!
Who can forget the cuff-like Hamilton Boulton that appeared in the legendary film 2001: A Space Odyssey? This watch kicked off more than six decades of special Hamilton watches in cinema. But what about video games? These highly realistic epic-like games often feature real actors and use their voices, so it makes sense to include a watch within the scenery. Death Stranding 2: On The Beach is the sequel to the 2019 hit game by Hideo Kojima and Kojima Productions. Over the last two years, Hamilton worked with Yoji Shinkawa, the game’s art director, to create the perfect complement to the sequel’s post-apocalyptic environment. As we’ll see, the watch falls under the American Classic Boulton line, but this is no 1940s tank.
The Hamilton Boulton Death Stranding 2 Limited Edition
Today’s Hamilton Death Stranding 2 Limited Edition is a black PVD-treated titanium watch with a tank-like shape. The Hamilton Boulton debuted in 1941 and, in its current form, normally registers with a 27mm by 32mm case size.
Here, the watch grows to a 36mm diameter, 48mm length, and 13.7mm thickness. It is paired with a three-row titanium bracelet with a sandblasted finish, a black PVD coating, and a butterfly clasp. Despite the complex crystal assembly (more on this shortly), the watch also has a 50m water resistance rating.
The Boulton Death Stranding 2 has a multi-surface dial with interesting topography. The outer section has a media-blasted finish and houses the mostly gray applied indexes. One lacquered orange index sits at 12 and matches a similarly colored seconds hand. The dial’s round black middle section steps down twice and displays the Hamilton name, logo, and “Automatic” in gray. Finally, oval-shaped, skeletonized, and brushed hour and minute hands complete the ultra-modern and somewhat spartan design.
Seven(!) top crystals
Perhaps the most notable details on the Boulton Death Stranding 2 LE relate to the watch’s crystals. A traditional curved rectilinear sapphire crystal with antireflective coating dominates the head-on view. However, titanium lattices on the sides contain a total of six more sapphire crystals. Sapphire “windows” on mid-cases are rare, but we’ve seen them before. This watch looks incredibly different because the additional lenses show the dial. No one will call this watch traditional, but the blend of a classic tank shape with its unique crystal design works well.
The H-10 is on display
The Death Stranding 2 Limited Edition uses the familiar automatic H-10 caliber. This is essentially an ETA C07.611 (Powermatic 80) based on the ubiquitous ETA 2824. In this application, the frequency drops to 21,600vph, but it has an increased power reserve of 80 hours. The Nivachron balance spring helps resist magnetic fields and temperature changes. The 25-jewel movement is visible under a case-shaped crystal, which includes a decoration like the tar in the game. Some informational details, such as the water resistance and individual number, are engraved into the case back’s black PVD-treated titanium frame.
Availability and final thoughts on the Boulton Death Stranding 2 Limited Edition
Naturally, the Boulton Death Stranding 2 LE comes with special packaging, including a polishing cloth to help with the abundance of sapphire surfaces. Interestingly, both the game and watch were announced on the same day, but neither will be available until June 26th. Still, Hamilton already has the watch on its official website. The game will be available to all, but the watch is limited to 2,000 individually numbered pieces. The price seems reasonable considering the titanium construction and funky sapphire crystals. An example will cost €1,625 / US$1,495 / £1,380.
I’m not always a fan of Hamilton’s fashion-forward film-collaboration watches, but this one strikes my fancy. I enjoy tanks, and this is a cool take on the style. Admittedly, I’m not a gamer, but I’m sure the linkage is only supportive of this release. What do you think? As always, we encourage you to share your thoughts in the comments below.
