If you ask someone to draw or describe the perfect dress watch, I’m sure it would look a lot like the Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin. Its classic case with elegantly sweeping lugs looks good on anyone’s wrist, and the dial is one of the cleanest and most legible in the industry. In short, it’s truly a masterpiece of a dress watch. Now Jaeger-LeCoultre is introducing a new blue-gray sunburst dial for the Master Ultra Thin Date in addition to the silver and beige that were already available. Let’s take a quick look.

For now, the new dial color is only available on the Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin Date. But I’m almost certain this sophisticated color will also make its way to the more complicated versions.

The Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin Date

Of course, the JLC Master Ultra Thin Perpetual Calendar is rather impressive. But its dial is quite cluttered, and the extra complications make the watch 9.2mm thick. Believe it or not, the Date is JLC’s thinnest Master Ultra Thin at just 7.8mm. It’s even thinner than the Small Seconds version, which comes in at 8.1mm and is currently only available in rose gold.

All right, let’s focus on the new Master Ultra Thin Date now. Its familiar stainless steel case measures 39mm in diameter, and the lugs span 46mm from tip to tip. For my 17cm wrist, I feel like the Master Ultra Thin is a bit too big with its time-and-date layout. However, this gorgeous new blue-gray hue makes it look smaller than its silver and beige counterparts.

The dial has a sunburst texture that’s as sharp as a knife. It goes very well with the high-polished and beveled elongated trapezoid indexes and dauphine hands. Honestly, I could do without the date window. But this one is executed and placed so well that it doesn’t bother me at all, especially with its ton-sur-ton date disc.

Yes, it’s an automatic

One of the impressive features of the Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin Date is its automatic movement inside. You don’t expect a watch this thin to have a rotor, let alone a central one. But yes, the in-house caliber 899 is a self-winder and holds a power reserve of 38 hours. That might not seem very impressive, but what more do you need when the movement rewinds itself as you move your arm around? It runs at a frequency of 28,800vph and features 35 jewels. JLC rigorously tests the movement for 1,000 hours before it leaves the brand’s manufacture in the Vallée De Joux.

Final thoughts

The Master Ultra Thin Date is a true classic within Jaeger-LeCoultre’s vast portfolio. It takes courage to introduce a new dial color for such an iconic piece within the collection. However, the modern blue-gray color matches the overall aesthetics of the JLC Master Ultra Thin Date extremely well. Of course, silver, beige, and navy blue work great on a dress watch. Still, it’s nice to see how the designers made the Master Ultra Thin’s classic character more contemporary with the sophisticated blue-gray hue.
