Making an early yet impressive start to the much-awaited deluge of Watches and Wonders 2025 releases, Patek Philippe has just introduced 15 new models to its catalog. Among them is the Calatrava 8-Day ref. 5328G-001. This watch also marks the debut of a new movement, the in-house 31-505 8J PS IRM CI J.
Patek Philippe Calatrava 8-Day 5328G
At first glance, the 5328G-001 aligns with the elegance we’ve come to expect from the Calatrava family. This latest model features a 41mm white gold case with a 10.52mm thickness. It has a smooth bezel, hobnail-guilloché case band, downward-sloping chamfered lugs, and a textured blue vignette dial. It has the same versatile and almost sporty aesthetic as the 5226G and 5326G models from 2022.
This latest execution packs a significant eight-day power reserve into a round Calatrava case and keeps things relatively slim. It incorporates a dual-barrel system for consistent energy delivery. Powering the watch is the new caliber 31-505 8J PS IRM CI J, which took five years to refine and introduces efficiency-focused innovations, including the Pulsomax escapement in Silinvar. A practical element is the ninth reserve day, indicated in red on the power reserve scale. This additional 24-hour period ensures the wearer has ample time to give the watch a full wind. Though accuracy may decrease slightly beyond the eighth day, having that margin is still handy.
Readability reigns supreme
The dial layout on the Calatrava 8-Day 5328G makes reading the information it provides a breeze. The power reserve indicator is positioned at 12 o’clock, while the subsidiary seconds and calendar display are grouped at 6 o’clock. A white pointer, which resides below the slightly shorter sub-seconds hand, indicates the date rather than a typical aperture. Additionally, the day of the week is displayed separately via a window contained within the sub-dial. Complete with a well-fitting shape and aperture-filling font, it’s an elegant solution that facilitates reading the day and date at a glance.
The vertical arrangement of the power reserve indicator and calendar-related displays makes the dial feel balanced and not overly busy. Also, the combination of the textured blue dial, its applied white gold lume-filled numerals, and the syringe-style hands keep it all as classy as you’d expect. Two strap options are included — a blue calfskin strap with a textile pattern and cream stitching and a grained taupe calfskin strap. Both close via a patented butterfly clasp.
Final thoughts
The new Patek Philippe Calatrava 8-Day 5328G is a worthy addition to the brand’s catalog. Its manually wound movement, extended power reserve, and distinct aesthetic that errs on the sporty side certainly showcase what the brand does best is best at. The new Patek Philippe Calatrava 8-Day ref. 5328G-001 has a list price of CHF 60,000.
