Since the brand’s founding in 2018, Norqain has built a robust lineup of modern, sporty watches. Customers like the attention to detail, expensive looks, and relatively affordable entry points. At Fratello, we’ve followed this journey by covering many of the latest releases. Today, we continue this by looking at the Norqain Independence Skeleton Chrono 42mm models, which feature a new in-house-designed chronograph movement.

We’re used to seeing new watch brands, although the pace of introductions is no longer as torrid as during the COVID period. Many of these companies make lower-cost watches and can be grouped into the “microbrand” category. Norqain, however, is different. In 2018, it emerged as a family-owned independent Swiss brand. There are associations with Jean-Claude Biver, and at least one owner has generations of watchmaking within the family. A focus on using Sellita and Kenissi movements or in-house designs has resulted in stylish pieces with a range of price points. Today’s Independence Skeleton Chrono models, while not inexpensive, are a thought-provoking alternative to more expensive brands’ offerings.

The Norqain Indpendence Skeleton Chrono 42mm

The latest Norqain watches come in two materials — titanium and steel.  I’ll break down each Independence Skeleton Chrono model individually, but let’s first focus on the common points. The watches are 41.8mm wide by 49.8mm long with a thickness of 13.9mm. That’s not small, but boldly designed watches often call for larger cases.

Each has a 100m water resistance rating, which should be enough for most activities. Speaking of intent, Norqain advertises robustness and lightness with images of exercising and tennis on its site, so these watches aren’t meant to be left in a locker. Another detail is the side badge that Norqain continues to use on its watches. I’ve made this remark before, but here I go again. I don’t love this feature because it feels dated, clunky, and unnecessary. However, the brand advertises that the plaque can be customized, so perhaps owners find this endearing.

The big news: the new Norqain 8K movement

Perhaps the most exciting detail of the Independence Skeleton Chrono models is the introduction of a new Norqain caliber 8K. This is a new automatic in-house-designed movement built by Sellita’s AMT group. It features a flyback function, 62 hours of power reserve, and chronometer certification. The 8K is viewable through the screw-in display back, and it shows off a column wheel and Alps-themed black-coated rotor. Aside from the flyback function, the movement powers a 30-minute register and running seconds sub-dial. I suppose a 30-minute counter is enough for most, but I can imagine some will wish for additional utility.

The titanium model in black and purple

The first Independence Skeleton Chrono is made from DLC-coated Grade 5 titanium. It is limited to 300 pieces and comes exclusively on a purple rubber strap. The open dial contains black and purple satin-finished elements with Super-LumiNova on the hands and indices. Normally, I’m ambivalent about open dials due to a lack of order. Norqain, however, has created a cohesive and balanced design with the regulator-style setup. Furthermore, I like the placement and horizontal nature of the logo. The lack of a date complication also helps reduce clutter. Pricing is set at €6,450, which feels reasonable considering the materials and exclusive movement.

The steel Independence Skeleton Chrono

A 316L stainless steel model is available on a matching bracelet or black rubber strap. Visually, it uses the same layout as the titanium model but eschews the purple in favor of satin-finished black elements on the dial. The gold-plated hands and indices have Super-LumiNova. With this model, the jewels provide contrast as well. Norqain will produce 300 pieces of this model now and offer an additional batch of 300 during Watches and Wonders 2025. The watches are priced at €5,950 with the bracelet and €5,700 on the black rubber strap. Normally, I enjoy a more subdued design, but if I had to choose between these watches, the titanium version would be my pick. I like the contrast more, but I can see how the stainless steel version would be more versatile.

The competition

At this price, the Norqain Independence Skeleton Chrono is an intriguing proposition. The just-announced TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Extreme Sport costs nearly €2,000 more and has a 44mm Grade 2 titanium case. Of course, the movement brings additional functionality, such as a date and 12-hour counter. Of course, more expensive options from Zenith and Hublot are available for those who desire an open dial, but these often add more exotic materials and higher-grade movements.

Final thoughts

The Independence Skeleton Chrono models are nice options for those who enjoy a sporty, futuristic-looking everyday watch with great specs and competitive pricing. Importantly, the watches introduce a new movement that will likely trickle down to future closed-dial versions that we will happily review.
