The Sternglas Hamburg Automatik is one of the brand’s most popular offerings. Now, in addition to silver, green, and blue dials, the model is available in Neugraphit, a dark gray tone. If you’re concerned that it’s another gray-and-white Bauhaus design, rest your fears because Sternglas has added bright colors to the mix.

When considering what a Bauhaus-inspired timepiece should look like, I immediately imagine a round watch with a polished case, simple stick lugs, and a legible dial with clear, basic markings. Watches like the Junghans Max Bill are perfect examples. Sternglas has cut its teeth on making Bauhaus-inspired watches available to buyers at reasonable prices. The Hamburg Automatik is the definition of the brand’s mission. Happily, Sternglas has expanded from only selling silver-dialed watches with black details. The newest Neugraphit edition exemplifies this.

The Sternglas Hamburg Automatik Neugraphit

The new Hamburg Automatik Neugraphit uses a familiar 42mm by 45mm polished 316L stainless steel case. It comes complete with a sapphire crystal containing a double antireflective coating. Optional 20mm straps include brown leather or yellow nylon, and a slim stainless steel bracelet is also available.

An eye-catching dial and handset

The domed matte gray dial on the Neugraphit model includes a white inner hour track and a matching external minute track. Round mint-green luminous pips at the cardinal points make for a noteworthy use of color on an otherwise monochromatic dial. Above the marker at 6 o’clock, we find a beveled rectangular date window containing a white-on-black date wheel. The handset, however, is where the watch becomes lively. Brushed and pointed silver metal hands house red-tinted Super-LumiNova. But the color wheel isn’t done spinning yet because the seconds hand is orange with a small white luminous rectangle toward its end. All told, the composition works and helps the Hamburg Automatik Neugraphit avoid looking like any number of Bauhaus-inspired timepieces.

A clean case design

The polished stainless case on the Hamburg Automatik Neugraphit has short lugs that curve downward to the wearer’s wrist. While the 12mm thickness isn’t as thin as a strict dress watch, that’s not the intent. Instead, this watch is meant to be durable enough to function across a wide variety of activities.

The automatic Miyota 8215

Sternglas uses the self-winding Miyota 8215 movement in the Neugraphit, which has a frequency of 21,600vph and 42 hours of power reserve. It’s a basic but reliable 21-jewel movement that also offers hand winding, hacking seconds, and a quick-set date function. The movement sits behind a solid stainless steel case back with an engraved map of Hamburg.

Easy on the wrist

A watch with a footprint like the Hamburg Automatik Neugraphit is easy to wear at any time. We paired it with an orange nylon strap for a casual appearance, and it looks great. Plus, it works well on a medium-sized wrist. The short lugs add a collective 3mm to the 42mm diameter, meaning the dial is the dominant attribute. Plus, I think the brightly hued hands add a welcome dose of color. It’s fun without being childish.

The Hamburg Automatik Neugraphit is priced at €429 and is available directly from the Sternglas website and at authorized retailers. This style of watch is typically popular with a wide variety of buyers because it works well in the office and during recreational activities. Furthermore, the bright color additions keep it from being boring. What are your thoughts on this latest release, and do you like the colors?
