Laco Extends Its Scorpion Line Of Sports Watches With Black DLC Models
We mostly know Laco for its extensive collection of vintage-inspired pilot’s watches. However, the brand also offers more modern silhouettes in its Squad and Sport Watches collections. The latter is a series of versatile sports watches with the looks of a modern diver. Besides the standard model series, Laco also allows you to customize one to your liking. Until now, you could only choose a stainless steel version in two sizes. The German brand now gives you more options by introducing a new series of black DLC models. It’s time to find out more!
It’s been five years since Laco first introduced its Scorpion watch series, which makes up the brand’s Sport Watches collection. The affordable modern sports watches were a great addition to the brand’s predominantly vintage-inspired catalog. In addition to 24 standard models, the brand offers buyers the chance to configure their favorites. And Laco made sure there was more to choose from than just a dial and strap color. As Gerard explained in his review of the stainless steel versions, you can choose from plenty of details. However, over time, the German brand added even more options. With the introduction of the new versions with stealthy black cases, the number of options has become even more impressive.
The story of the Laco Sport Watches collection
So, where to start? Let’s start with the basics. The Laco Sport Watches series consists of four basic models, all with a black dial featuring white Arabic numerals and indices for optimal legibility. Up until to this point, you could choose between a 39mm and a 42mm stainless steel case with a brushed finish. But now you can also choose a black DLC-coated case in either of those sizes. The 39mm version is 13mm thick, whereas the 42mm version is slightly thicker at 13.4mm. Both new black DLC-coated cases are water resistant to 300 meters, making them perfectly equipped for diving.
The four standard versions have colorful accents, giving each one a markedly different look. The first is the Himalaya model, which has a full set of white numerals and markings. The handset consists of white hour and seconds hands and an orange minute hand that adds a bit of color. The second is the Amazonas model, which features a series of green accents to accompany the white numerals and markings on the dial and bezel. It also has a light green minute hand.
The third model is the Atlantik, which has light blue accents and a light blue minute hand. The fourth and last model is the Mojave, which features a combination of white numerals and orange markings on the dial and bezel and an orange minute hand.
The markers on the dial, the hands, and the hash marks on the bezel are all treated with Super-LumiNova, which lights up brightly in the dark. The lume glows in different colors, which correspond to the accent colors of the different models. It’s a nice feature that shows Laco’s attention to detail in developing these watches.
The Sellita-based Laco caliber 200
Inside the black DLC-treated case and hidden behind the scorpion engraving on the back, Laco equips the watches with its caliber 200. Essentially, this is the Elaboré grade of the Sellita SW200-1 that features a standard finish. But Laco also offers you the option of picking the Top version of the same movement, and you can also opt for a decorated finish when configuring your version of the Scorpion Sports Watch.
The Sellita SW200-1 that Laco uses for its standard models is an automatic movement that operates at 28,800vph, has 26 jewels, and offers 41 hours of power reserve. The Elaboré grade is adjusted in three positions and offers an accuracy of ±7 seconds up to ±20 seconds per day. It’s a solid pick for this series and includes a date complication seen on the dial at 3 o’clock.
A wide array of strap options
When it comes to different strap options, you can choose a black rubber strap or a colored strap matching the accent color. On top of that, you can also go for a NATO-style strap in black, orange, green, or blue.
Lastly, a stainless steel bracelet with a black DLC coating is available to match the case. This stealthy Oyster-style bracelet features a double-locking DLC-treated folding clasp with a push-button release.
The quality of the bracelet and clasp is very decent, and they give the watch quite a technical look. However, they also significantly increase the weight of the watch. The Scorpion weighs 94 grams on the rubber strap, but it weighs 182 grams on the bracelet. To me, this is a good reason to choose the rubber straps, which also add a nice splash of color to your watch.
Wearing the Laco Scorpion watches
Once on the wrist, the watches wear very nicely. When it came to picking a favorite size, I was hesitant at first. My immediate reaction nowadays would be to go for the 39mm version as I tend to wear smaller watches. But the size difference is not all that obvious at first glance.
The black case certainly contributes to that because it makes the 42mm version seem smaller. But it also doesn’t look big on my 18.5cm wrist. I love that about the black models. They look super stylish with this sleek look. Add a bright (and ridiculously long) rubber strap, and you have a great sports watch.
Having a chance to wear the two sizes and the different colors was a great way to get a feel for this series of Laco Sport Watches. The brand does not describe them as “dive watches” per se, but they do look like that. Plus, we all know that a great dive watch can also be a solid all-around sports watch.
And that is exactly what they are. In the end, if I had to pick a size, I would opt for the 39mm case. It fits my current preferences better, but you can’t go wrong with the 42mm version either.
Out of the four available standard versions, I prefer the orange Mojave model the most. But that’s just as simple as a color preference. Okay, well, the mix of lume that lights up green and orange also works well in the dark. Then again, that is also a simple color preference.
Final thoughts on the Laco Scorpion Sport Watches
I love what Laco has done with these new DLC Scorpion Sport Watches. They are great additions to the lineup that will most definitely win people over. With all of Laco’s choices, the first step would be your favorite case execution. To be honest, I would pick these black DLC versions over the regular stainless steel ones. I love the look, and the all-black case and black dials contrast with the bright accent colors so well. I would also look into configuring my ideal version with all the different options that Laco offers on its website.
The standard black-case models are for sale now for €990 on the rubber strap. That’s the price for both the 39mm and the 42mm versions. If you want the watch on the black DLC-treated bracelet, the price is €1,090. That is a very fair price when considering what Laco offers for the money. The looks, build quality, movement, and specs make for a great series of sports watches. I also love the fact that Laco offers you the chance to configure your preferred version on the brand’s website.
And that doesn’t just mean a different strap color but also a different dial, crystal treatment, strap style, and movement execution. You can even add your preferred engraving if you wish. Of course, all of these options will cost you, but they don’t add large sums of money to the price. So kudos to Laco for expanding the series of Sport Watches with these new Scorpion models that will surely find their way to fans quickly.
