Maurice Lacroix Pontos S Diver — BaselWorld 2013
Maurice Lacroix Pontos S Diver PT6248
I rarely write about Maurice Lacroix watches on Fratellowatches and I actually don’t know why. Back in 2008, I asked ‘What to think of Maurice Lacroix?‘ and it received quite a few interesting responses.
Anyway, just recently I’ve become quite intrigued by their Pontos collection. Although I have a weak spot for some of their complicated watches for a long time (especially their Masterpiece Collection, the Moonphase model) I started to like their Pontos collection.
Polished Facet On The Lugs
I am a sucker for chronograph watches, and the Pontos collection has a number of very cool watches with this type of complication. However, some days ago I received their press release with some BaselWorld novelties and I came across their Pontos S Diver as well. I am not a diver myself and fit right into the category of being a so-called ‘desk diver’. However, I like the look of diving watches and this Pontos S Diver caught my eye when I was really searching for their new chronograph watches.
The Maurice Lacroix Pontos S Diver is a 43mm watch with a case made out of stainless steel. To me, a diving watch should – without any particular logical reason – be a bit heavy. The case has a beautiful design and finish; it even has a very nice facet on the lugs. Something very familiar to those who are fans of Rolex diving watches. Also, the watch has an inner (diving) bezel that can be turned by using the crown at 2 o’clock.
As you can see on the picture above, the case, crown and pushers has a brushed finish as well as polished finish parts. I love it when brands are able to play with these different type of finishes on a watchcase. The picture below shows the bezel and domed sapphire crystal a bit better.
Water Resistant To 600 Meter: Not Only For Desk Divers
With a depth rate of 600 meter, Maurice Lacroix decided to add an automatic helium escape valve is there to prevent the crystal from popping of because of the pressure from the inside (helium gas is being formed by the high pressure under water).
The Pontos S Diver comes with either a leather strap or a stainless steel bracelet but always with an extra NATO strap. We would have expected a rubber strap on a diving watch, but perhaps Maurice Lacroix knows that most people are like me… desk divers.
Maurice Lacroix has used their calibre ML115 movement for this watch, with a power reserve of 38 hours and with just one ‘complication’, which is the date. The base movement for this ML115 is the Sellita SW200. The ETA2824-2 is the blue print for the Sellita SW200.
Like all other Pontos watches, the dial of the PT6248 is just stunning. It comes with either a black sun-burst dial or an off-white opaline dial. As with most sports watches, I am definitely in favour of the black dial. The hands really have a good contrast with the black dial, although it seems as the white dial is also pretty readable with these silver color hands.
In my humble opinion, the date feature could be left out. Especially on the black dial version, as the disc wheel is white and contrasts a bit too much with the dial. On the off-white dial version – see the picture above- it doesn’t bother me that much though.
At this time, a price for the Maurice Lacroix Pontos S Diver PT6248 has not been communicated yet. We will keep you posted as soon as the price has been announced.
