Mühle Glashütte Introduces The New Sportivo Line
Mühle Glashütte is known for its sporty and reliable timepieces. For 2024, the brand has big news with a brand-new line of watches. The Sportivo collection consists of three models made for sports, the office, and everywhere else. We’ll provide a brief overview of each release.
The Mühle Glashütte Sportivo line includes a chronograph, GMT, and compass date. As we’ll see, all these watches have rotating external bezels, screw-down crowns, and a 300m water resistance rating. The pieces share a 42.5mm stainless steel case design and rely on Sellita automatic movements. Additionally, the watches come on a canvas and rubber strap that uses 100% recycled PET bottles. Oyster-style bracelets with folding clasps are €250 options on each watch. Now, let’s look at the three models.
Mühle Glashütte Sportivo Compass Date
The Sportivo Compass Date may look like a diver, but it’s actually a watch with a bidirectional compass bezel. Using the bezel is straightforward. When the watch is held horizontally with the hour hand pointed at the Sun, the hour hand and 12 o’clock create an angle. The center of this angle points to the south. A textured blue gradient dial works with Super-LumiNova-filled hands and indices. Neon green enters the picture on the rehaut, central seconds hand, and non-cardinal-direction markings on the ceramic bezel insert.
The stainless steel Sportivo Compass Date is 11.4mm thick and uses a 2.2mm-thick domed sapphire crystal with an antireflective coating. A decorated Sellita SW200-1 automatic works away underneath a display back and offers 41 hours of power reserve. This well-known movement features a quick-set date function and hacking. Price-wise, the Compass Date is €2,300 with a strap and €2,550 on the steel bracelet.
The Sportivo Travel GMT
Next, the Sportivo Travel GMT brings a more formal look to the lineup with its black, gray, and blue dial. This attractive piece has an inner 24-hour ring that works with a small, arrow-tipped GMT hand. The external bezel looks like a diver’s style, but it’s bidirectional. Once again, ample Super-LumiNova is employed on the indices, hands, and ceramic bezel. The watch is also thin at just 11.4mm.
Like the Compass Date, the Sportivo Travel GMT relies on a Sellita movement. The watch uses the automatic SW330-2 and boasts 56 hours of power reserve. This is a caller-style GMT movement with an independently adjustable 24-hour hand and quick-setting date function. At €2,700 on a black and blue strap or €2,950 on the bracelet, this is my favorite design of the trio.
The Sportivo Active Chronograph
Lastly, the Sportive Active Chronograph joins the fray with an attractive textured blue gradient dial and orange highlights. This two-register chronograph shows the running seconds and has a 30-minute totalizer. A black-on-white date wheel sits at the bottom of the dial and mimics the slightly trapezoidal Super-LumiNova indices. Rectangular pushers integrate well with the crown guards and surround the large screw-down crown.
Again, the Sportivo Active Chronograph uses a Sellita caliber. Here, Mühle Glashütte has given it the MU 9419 designation, but it is based on the SW500. This movement offers 62 hours of power reserve and shows off a decorated rotor and surface finishing via a display back. This is a chunkier watch at 15.5mm, but part of this is due to the 2.2mm-thick sapphire crystal. This is the most expensive piece at €3,800 on the strap and €4,050 on the steel bracelet.
Final thoughts
With the new Sportivo line, Mühle Glashütte has created a composed and competitive collection. As mentioned, I’ve always liked the brand’s relatively approachable prices and likable aesthetics. The color combinations work well here, and the sizes should appeal to those who aren’t on board with the small-watch trend.
