Since 2012, Nomos has supported the German office of Doctors Without Borders, also known as Ärtze ohne Grenzen. The humanitarian aid organization was set up in December 1971 in Paris by journalists and doctors to provide an emergency medical response and help people afflicted by crises in conflict zones or victims of natural disasters. This neutral, Nobel Peace Prize-winning organization prioritizes the welfare of those suffering regardless of their political or religious backgrounds. Doctors Without Borders is also a non-profit operation. Therefore, any kind of contribution makes a difference. With a series of limited-edition timepieces, Nomos has already raised over €1.3 million to date. With its new limited-edition Ludwig Neomatik, Nomos aims to add another €125,000 to that already impressive amount.

There is not just one limited edition but two. Indeed, they’re quite similar because the only difference is their size. Let’s take a quick look at the new Nomos Ludwig Neomatik LE, which supports a very noble cause.

The Nomos Ludwig Neomatik für Ärtze ohne Grenzen

As you can see from the Nomos Ludwig lineup, it’s certainly not the most daring collection in terms of colors. Don’t worry; the designers didn’t suddenly go crazy on this limited edition either. In 2022, we also wrote about a Nomos limited edition for Doctors Without Borders. At that time, the brand celebrated its 10 years of support with a red numeral at 12 o’clock on its iconic Tangente. This time, the company’s slightly more rounded and classic Ludwig gets a similar treatment.

As mentioned, you can choose between two sizes. There’s the smaller variant, which measures 36.4mm in diameter, and there’s the larger size, which is 38.5mm in diameter. The lug-to-lug measurement on the smaller version comes in at 46mm, while the lugs on the bigger version span 48.5mm from tip to tip. Both models come with an exhibition case back as standard and are only 7mm thick.

Nomos limited edition Ludwig movement

That thinness is achieved with the help of the Nomos DUW 3001 automatic movement. That’s right; there’s a self-winding caliber inside both these watches. It runs at a frequency of 21,600vph, features 27 jewels, and holds a power reserve of 43 hours. This caliber was developed in-house by Nomos and is produced at the brand’s movement factory in Glashütte. The nice finishing includes classic Glashütte ribbing (aka Geneva stripes), perlage, and heat-blued screws. On the case back, you’ll also find a special inscription and the individual LE number.

Still very much a Ludwig

If you’re familiar with the Ludwig collection, you know that all of the models feature Roman numerals on the dial. This limited-edition Ludwig Neomatik für Ärtze ohne Grenzen is no exception. But there certainly is something special about the dial. Just like the 2022 Tangente limited edition, this Ludwig also features red numerals at 12 o’clock instead of black ones. Red has been the color of Doctors Without Borders since the beginning. Besides, it really stands out on the pale white dial and in between the other black numerals and the black hands.

Nomos limited edition Ludwig text at six o'clock

The final special feature is the “Ärtze ohne Grenzen” text at 6 o’clock. On other Nomos watches, it says “Made in Germany” there. The only other color on the dial is the gold printing for the “neomatik” text underneath the Nomos Glashütte logo, which is also present on many other Nomos watches. Each of these Ludwig versions comes on a black Horween Genuine Shell Cordovan leather strap. When you order the watch, you can choose between a pin buckle or a deployant clasp (+€60). The new limited-edition Nomos Ludwig für Ärtze ohne Grenzen costs either €2,880 for the smaller size or €3,050 for the bigger one.

A stylish watch for a noble cause

It’s very noble of Nomos to continuously support the Doctors Without Borders organization with the funds it raises through these limited editions. By now, the red numerals at 12 are a very recognizable indicator of these watches. In addition, this take on the Ludwig Neomatik also fits very well into the clean and minimalist Nomos design language. There are only 250 pieces available in each size. So if you’d like to help support Doctors Without Borders with one of these watches, don’t wait too long.
