The Sternglas Kanton Is An Elegant Swiss-Made Automatic
INHORGENTA 2020 in Munich, saw Hamburg-based micro-brand, Sternglas, debut its most sophisticated model to date: The Sternglas Kanton. This automatic model is manufactured in Switzerland in compliance with ‘Swiss-made’ standards. It strikes a captivating balance between the classic and the modern.
The luminous hands by Luminova and bold color contrast allow for excellent legibility and make no secret of the inspiration behind this timepiece: the visual language of Bauhaus. The delicate curves and satin-finish dial underpin the classic elegance of the watch.
The Swiss STP 1-11 caliber
On the inside, the Swiss STP 1-11 caliber movement guarantees precise timekeeping, with a deviation of a mere +15 seconds per day. The ornate movement of the watch, complete with its deep-etched rotor and blued screws, is visible through the sapphire crystal base.
Making a name for itself
In the space of just 3 years, Sternglas has succeeded in making a name for itself on the watch market. Sternglas blends high-quality craftsmanship with an aesthetic that is both modern and timeless. These are just some of the ingredients crucial to the Hamburg start-up’s recipe for success. Since its foundation, owing in a large part to a successful Kickstarter campaign in 2016, Sternglas has continued to work alongside and communicate openly with its community. As with all other models that came before it, the new Kanton is once again the product of feedback from and close collaboration with the Sternglas community.
Sternglas founder and designer, Dustin Fontaine, discovered the world of watches at an early age. While at school, he worked at a watch manufacturer in his hometown, Münster, Germany. Finally, in 2011, he made a decision: “I was looking for high-quality, minimalist watches at affordable prices. I wasn’t impressed by what the market had to offer so I took it upon myself to do something about that.” The status of Sternglas as a brand that provides quality but which seeks to distance itself from the luxury market plays a pivotal role in its current success.
Superior craftsmanship
The Kanton represents the brand’s enduring commitment to this very ethos. The watch case also exhibits superior craftsmanship. The 39 mm polished stainless steel exterior sits comfortably on the wrist. This is thanks to the watch measuring just 10mm thick. Additionally, the luminous hands by Luminova and illuminated spots make it easy to tell the time, even at night. A selection of Italian leather watchstraps — complete with decorative stitching — can quickly change the appearance of the watch head. These finishing touches create the distinctive look of the classic Swiss timepiece.
