Three New MoonSwatch Mission On Earth Editions — Lava, Polar Lights, And Desert
Following the two MoonSwatch Snoopy watches (here), Swatch introduces three new models based on Omega’s iconic Speedmaster design. The previous MoonSwatch introductions linked to Apollo 13’s Snoopy models from Omega, and the new MoonSwatch models pay tribute to the beauty of planet Earth. Three new models will go on sale at Swatch boutiques on June 15th — the Mission On Earth Lava, Mission on Earth Polar Lights, and Mission on Earth Desert.
Swatch has teased us on its Instagram account in the last few days, and some Swatch boutiques have already received the aqua-blue case with the three MoonSwatch models inside. Let’s have a closer look at the three new MoonSwatch additions.
MoonSwatch Mission on Earth Lava
Swatch’s press release states that the Lava edition takes inspiration from volcanoes. There are about 1,670 active volcanoes on Earth, allowing the red-hot lava to escape for about 60 of them yearly.
This MoonSwatch is also a nod to Omega’s Speedmaster “Ultraman”; indeed, it looks very similar to our mock-up that we did a while ago in this article, based on the Speedy Tuesday 2 “Ultraman” edition.
The Mission on Earth Lava looks redder than our mock-up, but the dial details are very similar. The case as well as the crown and pushers are made of red-orange Bioceramic.
The black dial has radial sub-dials, as found on the Speedmaster Project Alaska II and III watches and the Speedmaster Speedy Tuesday “Tribute to Alaska III” model. The dimensions of the MoonSwatch case are identical to that of the Omega Speedmaster, just like the previous MoonSwatch models. This version comes on a black strap with red-orange “hardware.”
MoonSwatch Mission on Earth Polar Lights
A MoonSwatch in a turquoise color represents the polar lights. This is something we also saw in the MoonSwatch teasers from the past few days. We recently witnessed the polar lights ourselves, and it’s an amazing, colorful effect in the night sky.
Green and blue are the most common colors of the aurora borealis; thus, Swatch chose turquoise for the bioceramic case, crown, pushers, and loop rings. The blue dial should remind us of the aventurine dial used in the Speedmaster Moonphase model from about a decade ago. Also, here we find the radial sub-dials.
MoonSwatch Mission on Earth Desert
Finally, there’s the Desert edition of the new MoonSwatch trio. It was inspired by the deserts on planet Earth, resulting in a sand-colored Bioceramic case and other exterior parts. Over a fifth of Earth’s landmass is covered in sand, and the Sahara is the largest desert in the world, covering more than 9 million square kilometers.
The taupe-colored dial has sand-colored hands, and here again, we find the radial sub-dials. The greige (taupe) strap has loops in sand-colored Bioceramic.
Price and availability
All MoonSwatch Mission on Earth editions have a design of planet Earth on the battery cover. And, of course, all MoonSwatch models have Super-LumiNova applied to the hands and hour markers, allowing you to read the time in low-light conditions. These three models will be offered in selected Swatch boutiques around the globe, but as always, you will only be allowed to buy one per person. The retail price is €275.
