Introducing: A Trio Of Zodiac Super Sea Wolf Ceramic Dive Watches
Around this time last year, Zodiac released several watches that could contend for “Summer Watch of 2022.” Whether it was the white-and-blue-bezel Super Sea Wolf or the titanium Super Sea Wolf Professional, the watches used splashes (not just pops) of color to lean into a fun summer vibe. This year, Zodiac is at it again. The brand is utilizing a ceramic outer case to go with the bright colors, resulting in three watches that scream “summer holiday!” Here are the new Zodiac Super Sea Wolf Ceramic models, featuring fresh white cases and familiar, summer-ready colorways.
Flashy and splashy
Last year, Zodiac debuted its first use of ceramic in a watch case with the blacked-out ZO9595. The black case and deep blue dial created a stealthy vibe that remained somewhat subtle despite the high-polished ceramic. This watch came alive in brighter settings that allowed the dial’s blue tone to separate itself from the black case. With these three new releases, Zodiac has taken a different route. There is nothing stealthy about these, which makes them so much fun.
Watermelon. Creamsicle. Carolina. We all know what color combinations come to mind when we see those three words. Coincidentally, these color schemes call back to some of the more popular colorways for the steel Super Sea Wolf. This time, however, they are done with a white ceramic outer case and a steel core. This is similar to the method Zodiac employed in the ZO9595, increasing durability and keeping costs lower. That’s the thing about a true summer watch: it has to be fun (which these certainly are) and relatively affordable. At a slight premium to their steel brethren, these Super Sea Wolf models seem to check all the boxes.
Familiar and fun
Anyone who has tried on a Super Sea Wolf knows how comfortably they wear. Either on Jubilee-style bracelets or straps, the steel variants’ 40mm case fits wrists very well, even with somewhat-long lugs. As mentioned, these new white ceramic models feature a ceramic over-case with a steel core. This increases the overall durability but also makes the watch just slightly larger at 41mm in diameter. Most of us will not notice this tiny difference. Also, if you are considering a white ceramic watch, making a slightly larger statement on your wrist (so long as it doesn’t compromise comfort, of course) is the name of the game. No one intends to be a shrinking violet with a white ceramic watch on!
The case offers the same 200m water resistance rating that is standard in the Super Sea Wolf line. This is good news because, while many of these watches might not be used to time dives, they will surely stand up to whatever poolside or beach-bound tests you may throw at them. Beating inside the case at 28,800vph is the Swiss-made STP 1-11. In this application, the movement is also certified as a chronometer. So while you may take a slightly more laid-back approach to your summer frivolities, your watch will at least be keeping near-perfect time.
The Zodiac Super Sea Wolf Ceramic is white hot
As watch enthusiasts, we are extremely spoiled for choice in many ways. As I’ve mentioned before, at times, it seems as though the amount of watch you can get under $2,000 these days can leave us with analysis paralysis on how to spend our hard-earned funds. Zodiac has released not one, not two, but three versions of the white ceramic Super Sea Wolf, again leaving us to decide which one speaks to us individually.
The ZO9590 is the trio’s most conservative (if we use that term very loosely) member. With a navy-blue dial and Carolina-blue minute track (and matching Tropic-style strap), it offers the most contrast between the case and the dial. The white ceramic bezel has black and navy markings to track elapsed time.
The ZO9591 is likely the least legible of the three. The white bezel with orange minute track (and matching Tropic-style strap) complements a light champagne-colored dial. The white hour markers offer little contrast to the dial, but the black and orange handset makes telling the time easier.
Lastly, the ZO9592 harks back to the summer hit of 2020, the watermelon Super Sea Wolf. A sunburst green dial with an orange minute track and bright white hour markers make this watch highly legible, and a matching green Tropic-style strap completes the package.
The handset on each watch is typical of the Super Sea Wolf, which means the hour and minute hands are different colors for easy identification. Each is filled with Super-LumiNova, as are the hour markers. The hour markers are also slightly different in these models compared to many of their steel counterparts. Rather than having contrasting outlines, these indices are solid, stark white with no outline, giving them the impression of floating over the dial.
Final thoughts
Certain things make us think of summer, whether it’s time spent on or in the water, our favorite cold beverage, or our go-to summer watch. As each year goes by, Zodiac continues to create watches ideally suited for our favorite ways to relax this time of year. As mentioned earlier, a perfect summer watch is fun, suited for almost anything, and usually affordable. With these releases, Zodiac has ticked all the boxes. A chronometer-rated, white ceramic watch offered in three fun colorways, all at US$1,795 (about €1,640) — what’s not to like?
